Last week I attended the Natural Product Expo East This is basically the stuff of healthy-food lovers live for. It’s a giant convention of all the best natural packaged foods. Ranging from Bob’s Red Mill, to Chobani, to Emmys Organics, and many brand smaller, and new brands debuting their products for the first time. I attended last year and noticed the paleo trend beginning to surface. This year, it came in hard. From paleo cookies, to baking mixes, to the very popular Grain Free Granola.

The main difference between paleo and regular granola is that traditional granola has a base of oats (not considered paleo), while paleo granola is made mostly of nuts and seeds (think almonds, walnuts, coconut, etc). Therefore, paleo granola is higher in protein & fat, while traditional granola will contain more carbohydrates (and possibly refined sugar too).

The difference in the nutrition label of paleo granola represents a very timely shift in our nutrition guidelines. Traditionally, granola is considered a low fat, high carbohydrate food. Paleo granola is actually high fat (the good, unsaturated fat, for the most part!). Recent studies, while observational only, have opened the doors for adding more fat into the diet with no association to heart disease. As a result, people are letting more fat into their diet.

So why is Paleo Passion Foods as my Paleo Granola of choice?

There is sometime that feels so genuine when you know there is a family- real people, working together for a greater purpose. These are good people, and I trust them. I have a lot of wafeel(ing)s right now because I just finished another semester of classes. Granted I got a 42 on one of my finals. No that is not a misprint. The most entertaining part (to me anyways…let’s hear it for self deprecation) is that the final was open book. And still a 42. Pending I don’t have to retake the class, I’ll only have two semesters left of this Master’s program in Nutrition and Functional Medicine. Aside from the nutritional epidemiology class I just bombed, I am so happy @myself that I decided to drop out of the Master’s I was supposed to begin in dietetics. What I’m learning now is so streamlined to what I hope to do in my future medical practice – linking diet and chronic disease, and what practitioners can prescribe to patients beyond pharmaceuticals to get them thriving again, rather than just existing. We’re covering topics like autoimmunity, gut health, hormone balancing, and the complicated phase I and II detoxification systems, all seen through the lens of both nutrition and medicine, as I firmly believe the two are inseparable and should be treated as such in a clinical setting. I’ve also started an incredibly fun new project, which I hope to reveal sometime soon!! AND I started dancing again with DanceWorks Boston – challenged by new pieces and choreography that make me a little uncomfortable / I’m honestly not that great at. I used to get FallOutBoy emo if I wasn’t naturally good at something, entranced by this idea of instant and effortless blemish-free performances, be that on stage or in classes or just life in general. I am a creature who thrives on planning and routine, and I think this mindset stunts evolution and has trained me to flee rather than fight if something feels off. Now I’m trying to settle into seeing failure through a spectacle of curiosity, as it’s a good moment to check in and say hey why don’t you just practice more or just try something different. With this new project and heading into a new season and semester, I very well may royally fu** some things up. But even if I look like a flailing fool, maybe I’ll just put a little more time in and see what happens. So here’s to a season of 42’s. Of appreciating (and laughing off) the failures. And to waffles. I’d also like more waffles this fall. Waf-FALLs and Waf-FAILS and Waf-FEELINGS. There it is.


1/2 cup oats
1/4 cup almond flour
2 tbsp cacao
1 scoop chocolate plant based protein powder
2 eggs
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon

2 tbsp peanut butter

Do this:

Grind oats into a flour.
Combine all other ingredients together and whisk until smooth.
Preheat waffle iron and spray (I use coconut oil spray).
Pour batter into iron.
Wait until you hear the beep.
Top with more Paleo Passion Foods ChocoNut granola and peanut butter.
Makes two servings – 3 mini waffles each.

Paleo Plum Crumble Bars

These are plum crumble bars. So yeah plumble bars. Stumble into the plumble and check out the recipe below. Made with paleo granola, and consequently entirely grain free, gluten free, dairy free, and vegan. With the produce of summer and the flavors of fall, these are a perfect way to slip into Autumn’s DM’s.


1 cup Paleo Passion Foods maple cinnamon granola (code Lemons15 for 15% off your purchase and free shipping)
1 cup almond flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup melted coconut oil
2 tbsp maple syrup
top: 1/2 cup Paleo Passion Foods maple cinnamon granola (code Lemons15 for 15% off your purchase and free shipping)

2 plum
2 tbsp coconut oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
pinch of salt
sprinkle of cinnamon

Get going:
preheat oven to 350F
combine granola and almond flour in a food processor, until granola chunks blend in smoothly with the almond flour
transfer to bowl and mix with baking soda, salt, coconut oil, and maple syrup
press into 8×8 dish and bake for 10 minutes

While it’s baking:
Combine plums, coconut oil, vanilla, salt, and cinnamon in a saute pan over medium heat
Saute until compote is formed
Pour compote mixture on top of granola/almond flour mixture
Sprinkle another 1/2 cup of Maple Cinnamon granola on top and dust with a little more cinnamon
Transfer to oven and bake for another 20 minutes, until top is golden brown.

Okay, guys… I’ve got THE EASIEST homemade paleo chocolate bark recipe for you all and it might change your life…

Fine, that was a little dramatic but homemade chocolate treats tend to do that to me. I can’t help but swoon over all things chocolate. Sometimes I think there might be something wrong with me… but then I’m all like “Nah, chocolate is amazing. This is completely normal.”

I’m sure I’ve said this before but I 200% do not understand when someone says they’re “not a chocolate person”. Exsqueeze me? <– sorry I’ve been binge watching The Mindy Project lately.

If you’re not a chocolate person what kind of person are you exactly?

A weird person, that’s what… I should probably say I am kidding after that statement buuutttt then I’d be lying… So yup, moving on. Hopefully all of you here love chocolate as much as I do and you’re still with me.

So what exactly is this magical creation we’re talking about today? PALEO CHOCOLATE BARK with GRAIN-FREE GRANOLA.

This dessert takes just five ingredients total and made with all the good-for-you stuff.

CACAO POWDER – antioxidants, phytonutrients, a good source of magnesium.
EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL – healthy saturated fats, medium chain fatty acids (MCT’s)
RAW HONEY – natural energy source

The process is also ridiculously simple. All you have to do is melt the coconut oil, cacao powder, honey and vanilla in a small sauce pan until fully combined. Then you transfer the mixture to a lined pan (or a silicone one like I used), top with the granola, and transfer the pan to the freezer for the chocolate to set. In about 30 minutes you’ll have healthy paleo chocolate bark ready to devour.

I love the added crunchy texture you get from the grain-free granola too. It’s kind of a must.

Blackberry pickin’ season is in full swing, and that can only mean one thing….. ENDLESS recipe possibilities! Initially, I wanted to make a dessert crisp. But with this hot weather we’ve been having I needed a refreshing late-night treat. A few weeks ago my girl @dani_nemeh posted these insane vegan blackberry cheesecake bars that literally made me drool looking at them on Instagram

With a few tweaks here and there (minimal because her recipe is bomb), these Frozen Blackberry Cobbler Bars were born! I swear the baked granola base makes the entire bar– I’m such a sucker for any crumble/crumb/crust you throw my way. My trusty taste testers (mom and boyf) were a little more than excited about these as well.

I used Paleo Passion Foods Caribbean Coconut grainless granola for the base and topped it with a decadent vegan, creamy, frozen layer that leaves me a little speechless. The top layer tastes so similar to cheesecake, which is why I don’t think I’ll ever understand how cashews sub as the perfect vegan cream factor in recipes! Mind-blown every time.

So many people are such big fans of granola, and they eat large amounts of it without thinking about what’s truly in their food. News flash: granola is NOT a health food if it’s filled with tons of refined carbohydrates and sugar.

On the other hand, if you are making your own granola or at home or making wise choices about what brands you purchase, granola can be a great filling snack or breakfast, but it’s important you read labels and pay attention to sugar content and other processed ingredients.

That being said, I just discovered granola from Paleo Passion Foods, and I’ve got some good news for you! This granola is grain-free, is filled with healthy nuts and seeds, and is only sweetened using honey!

This parfait is an easy snack that provides you with fiber and protein, and it can be assembled in just 5 minutes!

Ingredients (serves 1)
3/4 cup Greek yogurt
1/2 cup raspberries
1/4 cup Paleo Passion Foods Choco-Nuts granola
Optional: 1/4 cup almond milk

1. In a bowl or parfait cup, layer the bottom with Greek yogurt. Top with a layer of raspberries.
2. On top of raspberries, add your granola layer. Finish with another layer of raspberries
3. Optional: add a splash of almond milk, and when you eat, mix everything together for more of a cereal consistency!
